Fillings

When there is minimal decay, faulty restorations, or minimal tooth structure missing, Dr. Olson may be able to restore the tooth with a filling. The tooth enamel is made up of hydroxy appetite crystals, which means that it is like a delicate crystalline structure. When a dentist prepares a tooth for treatment it disrupts the continuity of this "crystalline structure", therefore Dr. Olson only uses white "composite" material to repair his patient's teeth, never amalgam (silver fillings). The restorative material needs to bond to the healthy portion of the tooth otherwise fractures and cracks will occur over time. This can result in the replacement of the fractures and cracks with a crown or onlay. Occasionally, these fractures could extend to the nerve causing the tooth to need a root canal or even be completely removed. In addition, the "composite" material looks like a natural tooth, wears like a natural tooth, and bonds to the remaining tooth structure, so that it is as stong as it was originally. This material is also specifically formulated to with stand the stresses found in the back of the mouth, where the majority of chewing takes place.
